Snap Fitness- 10 Minutes

Sharleen Snook- Snap Fitness

Back in 2011 I decided to get fit in the comfort of my own home (so I thought anyway). I purchased an ab circle and it was going great until one day things took a turn for the worst. I had just completed a workout, begun my cool-down started, marching on the spot and pop. I fell to the ground, having no idea what had happened I tried to stand and fell back down again. I looked down at my leg and could see that my knee-cap had dislocated.

As calmly as possible I managed to wake my daughter and she got me the phone so I could call 111. Lucky for me I knew my brother was due to arrive soon, I was relieved and even more relived when the ambulance arrived. The Paramedic gave me two options on arrival he said “I can try put it back it now or take you to hospital and you can wait in A&E for a doctor to do it”. I choose the first option he gave me pain relief in the form of nitrous oxide (laughing gas). The first attempt at to relocated the patella was a fail on the second attempt my brother helped and it was a success instantly my leg swelled and throbbed like nothing I’d ever felt before it was the most pain I had ever experienced even to this day.

After going through physio I got to the point whereas I needed to build muscle back up in my leg as I had a lot of muscle wastage so I decided to take on a personal trainer to help me achieve my goal. I joined snap fitness and did just that.

I got on really well with the staff and they often praised me on my excellent fitness regime, Zara (manager) often said if I was to get qualified she would employ me in a heartbeat. Along the way I decided that I really did enjoyed being around the people at the gym, I loved the environment and thought that becoming a personal trainer would be a good career for me.

Deciding to hire a personal trainer is empowering, fun and even a bit scary. But dedicating and investing in one can lead to invaluable rewards, allow you to overcome physical and mental barriers and provide the real results you want.

Qualities you should look for in a trainer are patience and honesty, good communication skills, professionalism, great personality, good presentation. To be a personal trainer requires a good understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and good movement patterns, exercise psychology and physiology.

There are many different learning institutes that offer initial qualification to become a personal trainer, however to work in the industry you then must get certified and register as a personal trainer with reps nz. Registration is annual and the trainer must earn a minimum of 10 cpd every year.

Most people decide to invest in a personal trainer to help become more accountable for their fitness goals. Goals are based around clients wanting to lose or gain something like increase lean muscle mass loss, master a skill like do 10 pushups without stopping, touch your toes, train for an event like a running race or a competition, change their lifestyle.

The most important thing you need to know about me is I love my job. I love my work and I believe in what I do. For many of my clients the first thing I aim to do is change their mindset. Believing in yourself is the first secret to success. A lot of people don’t believe in themselves and their abilities they don’t believe they are capable of change making this a common reason why people fail on their fitness journey.

When people decide to take me on as their personal trainer they realize rather quickly that I listen, I listen to you, I ask the right questions, I want to understand what your trying to achieve, I observe your movement patterns I take note of your body language, I want to find the best, safest way possible to help you on your fitness journey I want you to reach your goal. I want success for you!
