GMC Chiropractors- 10 Minutes

Welcome to GMC Chiropractors, 172 Kimbolton Road, Feilding. Dr Josephine Miles (Chiropractor), comes from a family of Chiropractors who work around the world. Josephine was a latecomer to the family business after first trying her hand at a number of careers including: Hospitality, Childcare, Business Ownership, Retail, Fashion, Operations Management and Human Resources. After the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, Jo re evaluated her life and decided she wanted to move into a life long career that she would find fulfilling, rewarding and most importantly could make a positive impact on the lives of others. Given the family connection, Chiropractic was the natural choice.

So for those not in the know (or those who think they know already…), What is Chiropractic? The New Zealand Chiropractors Association writes, “Chiropractic is about helping the body to work at its best. Your nervous system, which controls all the functions of your body, is protected by your spine. Sometimes the stresses and strains of daily life cause nerve messages from the brain to get blocked. By making small adjustments to the spine, nervous system and soft tissue chiropractors can remove these blockages so that the messages reach the organs effectively. The philosophy is simple: if your nervous system is working properly the body is better able to heal itself and perform at its full potential. A healthy spine and nervous system can help anyone at any time in their life regardless of age, condition, presence or symptoms.”

Frequently asked questions about Chiropractic:

1. Is my Chiropractor Qualified? Chiropractors in New Zealand study for a minimum of 5 years attaining a Bachelor of Chiropractic with a strong focus on the sciences and finishes with a supervised internship. Once qualified, Chiropractors are accorded the title of “Doctor of Chiropractic”.

2. Is Chiropractic just about back pain, neck pain and headaches? Ongoing research shows that while Chiropractic care may improve chronic back pain and neck pain by up to 97%. Other published research indicates that Chiropractic may help relax pelvic muscles in pregnant women, strengthen pelvic floor muscles in non-pregnant women, may help prevent falls in elderly, may improve sports performance by increasing muscle strength, reaction times and decreasing muscle fatigue.

3. Once I start coming to the Chiropractor, do I have to KEEP coming? No! Each person has their own goals and priorities. Most of our patients choose to maintain optimal spine and nervous system function and be proactive about their health and wellbeing by having regular check ups but others may choose to only come to see us when they are experiencing pain or discomfort.

What to Expect when you visit GMC:

Visit One: New Patients to GMC Chiropractors fill out a comprehensive Health History Questionnaire when they come into our office. Following this the Chiropractor completes a verbal health history to gain further detail an insight. If it is deemed safe (depending on injury for example), a Spinal examination, including neurological and orthopedic tests will be conducted. If deemed appropriate X-Rays may be taken on site. The Chiropractor will study and collate the information to arrive at a diagnosis and decide whether Chiropractic care is safe and appropriate for the patient (or provide onward referral).

Visit Two: After studying the health history, physical examination and xrays (if taken), the Chiropractor presents a Report of Findings to the patients, outlining what is going on in the spine and nervous system and the impact on current health and potentially future health. The Chiropractic will present a care plan, stretches and discuss lifestyle alterations that may be required to assist faster healing. If the patient is satisfied that the care plan and treatment proposed is in their best interests, the Chiropractic will proceed to perform the first “adjustment”

Further Visits: Our regular visits usually consist of a recap, reevaluation and adjustment. We use 5 different core techniques which allows us to tailor care appropriately to the person we are working with (eg due to age, injury, disease, personal preference etc.). Over the first few visits we take extra care to monitor changes and responses while we ascertain the way to garner the best result for each individual.
